About the Medications

Ozempic®, Wegovy® and Mounjaro® are considered GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide receptor agonists) medications. These medicines are used to treat type 2 diabetes by helping the body make more natural insulin which lowers sugar levels. Doctors and scientists realized that this class of medicines also resulted in significant weight loss for their patients.

In 2021, the FDA approved Wegovy® as a stand-alone weight loss medication for people without diabetes. The GLP-1 medications are taken once weekly. They make people feel fuller faster and for longer and help them lose weight.

Frequently Asked Questions

The new weight loss medication that has been approved by the FDA is for people who are clinically overweight. Eligible people must have a body mass index (BMI) above 30, or above 27 if they have additional weight related conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol or triglycerides, or diabetes.

To get a prescription for a weight loss medication you are required to complete an initial consultation to make sure that the medication is appropriate and safe for you. This evaluation includes an online health history questionnaire, lab testing (at-home options are available), and a telehealth consult with a board-certified doctor to obtain your initial prescription if applicable.

After the initial consultation, our dedicated patient advocate team will work with you to get approval from your insurance company for the cost of the medication or to help you get the medication at the lowest possible price. You can use the pharmacy of your choice or have the medication delivered directly to your home.

Once the medication is started, you will have periodic follow-up telehealth visits with our medical team to check on your progress, ensure that the medication is working properly, and to provide prescription refills when needed.

The Rx Program monthly fees are not covered by insurance at this time. However, the cost of the medication may be covered by your insurance and our patient advocate team will assist you with the authorizations needed for insurance coverage. You also may be able to use your health savings account (HSA) or flexible spending account (FSA) to cover the costs of the program and medications.

The simple answer is, yes! Your health and safety are of the utmost importance to us. Our medical team requires a lab testing to make sure that the medication is safe for you. We also require periodic lab tests to make sure your body remains healthy while under treatment. The patient advocate team will help make this convenient for you.
